about

Monjovica (Mons Iovis = Mount of Jupiter in Latin), is the oldest name given to Montjuïc, the magical mountain of Barcelona. This song is inspired by its unique geological characteristics, and also by its archaeological wealth.
From its formation in a coastal and deltaic environment 15 million years ago, to the most recent historical vestiges, Montjuïc has stood as a symbol of the city since ancient times for many reasons. Its numerous quarries have not only provided the raw material to build the Roman center and its walls, but have continued to do so until the mid-20th century for various buildings in Barcelona. Its unique rocks tell us the story of a warm sea with abundant marine fauna that invades the coast and forms a delta. Later, the sea surrounds the old delta and turns it into a large island that rises little by little, ending with the fracturing and sinking of its maritime slope, and the subsequent formation of the Barcelona plain thanks to the sediments retained by the relief of this mountain. In the times of the Iberians and the Romans, the ancient mouth of the Rubricatus (Llobregat River) was located south of Montjuïc, and the numerous archaeological finds carried out give us a very varied vision of the scenarios and realities that have enriched its history until the present day.
